We Were Soldiers

A French unit on patrol in Vietnam in 1954, during the final year of the First Indochina War is ambushed by North Vietnamese Armyforces. NVA commander Nguyen Huu An orders his soldiers to "kill all they send, and they will stop coming."
Eleven years later, the United States is fighting the Vietnam War. U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) is chosen to train and lead a battalion. After arriving in Vietnam, he learns that an American base has been attacked and is ordered to take his 400 men after the enemy and eliminate the Vietnamese attackers, despite the fact that intelligence has no idea of the number of enemy troops. He leads a newly created air cavalry unit into the Ia Drang Valley. After landing in the "Valley of Death", the soldiers learn that the location they were sent to is actually the base camp for a veteran North Vietnamese Army division of 4,000 men.
Upon arrival in the area with a platoon of soldiers, 2nd Lt. Henry Herrick spots an enemy scout, runs after him, and orders reluctant soldiers to follow. The Vietnamese scout lures them into an ambush, resulting in several men being killed, including Lt. Herrick and his subordinates. The surviving platoon members are surrounded with no chance of retreat. Sgt. Savage assumes command, calls in artillery, and uses the cover of night to keep the Vietnamese from overrunning their small defensive position. Meanwhile, with helicopters constantly dropping off units, Lt. Col. Moore manages to secure weak points before the Vietnamese can take advantage of them.
On the second day, despite being trapped and desperately outnumbered, the main U.S. force manages to hold off the Vietnamese with artillery, mortars, and helicopter airlifts of supplies and reinforcements. Eventually, Vietnamese commander Nguyen Huu An orders a large-scale attack on the American position.
At the point of being overrun by the enemy and with no options left, Moore orders 1st Lt. Charlie Hastings, his Forward Air Controller, to call in "Broken Arrow" (Moore's position is being overrun and can no longer be defended, and all available combat aircraft to assist and attack enemy positions, even those close to the U.S. troops' position). The aircraft attack with bombs, napalm and machine guns, killing many PAVN and Viet Cong troops; but a friendly fire incident results in American deaths. The second Vietnamese attack is repelled and the surviving US soldiers led by Sgt. Savage are rescued.
Moore's troops regroup, secure the area, and stop at the base of a hill. The Vietnamese commander plans a final assault on the Americans and sends most of his troops to carry out the attack. The Vietnamese have set up strong emplacements near the hidden entrance of the underground passage to the command post spoken of by the scout. Hal and his men charge at them, but before the Vietnamese can fire, Major Bruce "Snakeshit" Crandall and others in helicopter gunships attack the Vietnamese, destroying the bulk of the enemy force.
Nguyen Huu An, the Vietnamese Commander, is alerted that the Americans have broken through their lines and there are no soldiers between the Americans and their command post. Since the Commander had deployed his reserve forces to a final offensive and the base camp has no troops to call upon for defense, the Vietnamese commander quickly orders the headquarters evacuated.
Moore, having achieved his objective, returns to the helicopter landing zone to be picked up. Only after everyone (including the dead and wounded) are removed from the battlefield does he fly out of the valley.
At the end of the film, it is revealed that the landing zone immediately reverted to North Vietnamese hands after the American troops were airlifted out. Hal Moore continued the battle in a different landing zone, and after nearly a year he returns home safely. His superiors congratulate him for killing over 1,800 North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong soldiers. An older Moore visits the Vietnam war memorial and sees the names of soldiers who fell at Ia Drang.

Fury (2014)

Fury is set during the last month of the European Theater of war during World War II in April 1945. As the Allies make their final push into Nazi Germany, a battle-hardened U.S. Army Staff Sergeant in the 66th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division named Don "Wardaddy" Collier (Brad Pitt) commands an M4A3E8 Sherman tank named Fury and its five-man, all-veteran crew: Boyd "Bible" Swan (Shia LaBeouf), gunner; Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis (Jon Bernthal), loader; and Trini "Gordo" Garcia (Michael Peña), driver. The tank's original assistant driver/bow gunner has been killed in battle and his replacement turns out to be a recently enlisted Army typist, Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman) who, it transpires, has never even seen the inside of a tank before, let alone experienced the ravages of war. Norman later earns the nickname "Machine", given to him by Grady Travis.
The surviving crew, which has been together since the North African Campaign, upon meeting the raw recruit despise him both for his lack of experience and for his reluctance to kill Germans, and especially teenagers of the Hitlerjugend, in cold blood; a decision which results in the destruction of one of the Allied tanks and its crew. Wardaddy is furious and in an effort to brutalise the young man and 'educate' him to the realities of war, he violently attempts to force Norman to take his weapon and shoot dead a captive German artilleryman. When Norman refuses to do so, Wardaddy forces the gun on him and makes him execute the prisoner. It is around this point in the film, that it becomes evident that Wardaddy has begun to feel a responsibility for the young man.
This bond between Norman and Wardaddy becomes stronger after capturing a small German town, where Wardaddy and Norman meet a German woman and her cousin, named Emma. Norman (presumably) has sex with Emma, then joins Wardaddy and Emma's cousin for breakfast, during which time Norman discovers that Wardaddy has sustained horrific burn scars on his back at some point. However, the rest of the crew barge in and cause tensions while at the table. Shortly afterwards, a German bombardment hits the town, killing Emma and some of the American forces.
The platoon of tanks, led by Wardaddy, gets a mission to hold a vital crossroads (protecting a clear way to supply trains), but after encountering a German Tiger I, only Fury remains, the other vehicles being knocked out. The vehicle is immobilized after hitting a landmine; shortly afterwards, a German column of three hundred Waffen-SS infantry approaches. Wardaddy refuses to leave, and the rest of the crew, initially reluctant, decide to stay and plan an ambush.
Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men nevertheless inflict heavy losses on the Germans using both the tank's and the crews' weapons, but eventually Grady, Gordo and Bible are all killed and Wardaddy is wounded by a sniper. Norman and Wardaddy retreat back into Fury where they share their last words. Wardaddy tells Norman to escape through the bottom hatch of the tank and he hides in the crater made by the landmine explosion, while Wardaddy stays behind and is killed by soldiers after they drop two grenades into the tank. A young German Waffen-SS trooper finds Norman, but does not turn him in, leaving the assistant driver hidden safely beneath the destroyed tank as the surviving German soldiers move on.
The next morning, U.S. Army units discover Norman, and it is implied that the German offensive failed because of the crew's actions. Norman is taken off to safety while he looks back at the carnage of dead German SS troops and the destroyed Fury.

Centurion (2010)

Beginning in 117 AD, the narrative opens with a Roman soldier fleeing across a snowy landscape, saying; "My name is Quintus Dias. I am a soldier of Rome, and this is neither the beginning, nor the end of my story."
The Romans have been unable to fully conquer the British Isles, meeting the fiercest resistance in the north, and the Picts of Albaare engaging in a guerrilla campaign against the Roman forts along the Glenblocker line and the Gask Ridge at the southern border of the Scottish Highlands. At Pinnata Castra, the Picts ambush and destroy the entire garrison, taking only one survivor for questioning, the centurion Quintus Dias, because Dias can speak the Pictish tongue. Taken prisoner by Vortix, Dias is brought to the Pict king Gorlacon who has united the northern tribes; Dias is brutally interrogated in the presence of the leader's son, who is forced to watch, although Dias escapes on foot, still bound and tracked.
Gnaeus Julius Agricola, the Roman governor of Britannia, wants to obtain favour with the Roman Senate, hoping to secure a transfer back to the comforts of Rome. He dispatches the Ninth Legion, under General Titus Flavius Virilus, to eradicate the Pictish threat and provides him with a Brigantian scout called Etain. As the legion marches north they encounter Dias and rescue him from three of Gorlacon's men. Dias tells Virilus of his encounter with Gorlacon and the general discovers that Dias' father was a famous gladiator whom he had seen fight. Dias befriends two Roman officers, a veteran named Bothos and a young Roman soldier named Thax.
Etain betrays the legion to Gorlacon, leading them into a trap where they are annihilated. The general is captured, while Dias, Bothos, and Thax survive, along with four others: "Brick"; two Greco-Roman legionaries named Macros and Leonidas; and Tarak, a cook from the Hindu Kush. They set out to rescue general Virilus and, after a few days' travel, they find him and sneak in at nightfall. Failing to break his chains, he orders them to leave him and get back to Roman territory. As they retreat, Thax kills Gorlacon's young son and recovers Virilus' helmet.
The next morning the general is confronted by Gorlacon, who explains that the iron chains were too brittle to pry apart and that his would-be rescuers should have shattered them instead of attempting to pry them loose. As Etain steps forward, Virilus is told the history of Etain: her father was killed and her mother raped and killed by Roman soldiers, who then raped her and cut out her tongue so she would be unable to tell anyone. She was found by the Picts and trained as a hunter and tracker, then sent back to the Romans to deceive them. He is then given a sword and made to duel with Etain, who kills him.
The seven plan to travel north (which is away from Roman territory) to throw the Picts off their trail, then head west, and then south. Meanwhile, Etain, Aeron, Vortix and a detachment of seven Pictish warriors are sent to kill them. After several days' pursuit they catch up with the fugitives, who jump off a cliff into a river. Tarak is killed before he can jump, Macros and Thax become separated from the others and see a wolf close-by. Dias and his group camp for the night, while their trackers set up camp nearby. Dias and Brick launch a night raid on the enemy camp, killing two men and severely wounding a third, but cannot find Etain. Dias learns of the death of Gorlacon's son, and that the king has sworn vengeance on their heads. Etain is absent, as she has launched her own attack on the Roman's campsite. Dias and Brick return to their camp, only to discover that Leonidas has been killed and Bothos injured.
Macros and Thax are running from a wolf pack. Thax falls, with the wolves in close pursuit, and cries out to his comrade for help. Macros returns to help him and Thax slices through Macros' hamstrings to prevent him from standing, allowing Thax to escape while the wolves attack and devour Macros. Dias, Bothos and Brick find a hut in the forest where they befriend Arianne, a Pict exile accused of witchcraft. She shelters them, provides food and medical attention. When Etain comes the following day, Arianne confronts her while the Romans hide in her grain store under the floorboards. The next morning they leave Arianne, who provides them with enough food to travel to a nearby Roman garrison.
They find the garrison abandoned, an order pinned to a post says that the Roman troops have retreated south, by the orders of Emperor Hadrian. As they see Etain and her group of Picts approach, they set up a defensive position inside the fort. Bothos kills Vortix and a female warrior, Dias kills two Picts, and Brick kills Aeron and the last Pict warrior; however, before the Picts are defeated, Brick is killed by a spear thrown by Etain whom Dias then kills.
Dias and Bothos continue southwards and are reunited with Thax. Upon reaching Hadrian's Wall which is beginning construction, Thax (afraid that Dias will report his actions) threatens Dias and they fight, with Dias killing Thax. Bothos, joyfully riding towards the Romans, is mistaken for a Pict and shot by an archer. When Dias enters the camp he reports to governor Agricola, who is concerned that news of the Legion's annihilation might cause other tribes to rise up against them. He is also fearful of his record being tainted by a military failure, and decides that the Ninth Legion's fate should remain a mystery and Dias must be killed. Dias manages to foil the attempt on his life, though he is grievously wounded in the thigh during the fracas, and Agricola's daughter tells him that he is too much of a risk. He escapes the camp and returns to Arianne in the forest. As the weakened Dias lies in her arms by the stream, he and Arianne kiss. The film ends with Quintus Dias adjusting the narrative of the film's opening line;
"My name is Quintus Dias. I am a fugitive of Rome, and this is neither the beginning, nor the end of my story."
